2016 Axis Wake A20 Boat Test

Riding the wake from the back of a boat is what fun on the water is all about, but getting on board can be expensive. The goal of Axis Wake Research has always been to get more people in a watersports boat at an affordable price. An excellent example of that is the Axis A20.

The A20 is all-new for 2016, redesigned from the hull up. Built with a budget in mind, the A20 may not have all of the flash and high-end technology found in a Malibu, but it delivers where it counts. Axis keeps it simple with the use of old style switches for ballast and cruise settings versus an all out expensive touch screen command centre.

It can still load up to 800 pounds (363 kg) of ballast with the Wake Box three-tank system, plus an additional 1,300 pounds with the optional Plug N Play ballast plumbing and soft tanks. Opt for the Axis Auto-Set Wedge with position indicator if you want to skip the extra tanks. If wake surfing is your thing surf gates can be ordered as well.

Our tester was sporting a black tower with optional racks, quick release latch and Wet Sound Icon 8 Speakers driven by an upgraded Kicker sound system.

Only 20 feet, there is plenty of interior space for up to 11. The optional Rear Slide SkyBox seating at the transom can be pulled forward to function as an ottoman or a rear-facing seat to catch the action.

The 350 horsepower Indmar 5.7 L V-8 demonstrated awesome pulling power hitting 20 miles per hour in 3.68 seconds. The new hull with tracking fin ensured that the A20 tracked true.

While designed for generating big wakes, pumped dry the A20 threw a small wake, so you can use the low mounted ski pylon. For beginners the boat stayed on plane as slow as 19 mph.

Small and agile, easily towed and stored on the standard trailer, the Axis A20 performs well on the water and on the road.

2016 Sea Ray 470 Sundancer Boat Test

As a Sundancer owner I’m always keen to get on board another model to see how it compares. When I first saw the 470 I was surprised at the limited exterior cockpit size, but once on board I appreciated the change.

Unlike my 15-year old model where the huge exterior cockpit is protected from the elements only by canvas, the new approach is the SkyFlow design. It means enclosed areas that are as wide open as possible.

Almost entirely windows, the full glass doors slide out of the way to open up the appropriately named sunroom to the exterior cockpit that features a grill and wet bar. Add to that the massive sunroof that glides open with the push of a button and the luxurious interior accommodations are open and airy.

The helm fits nicely without being a massive interruption of the entertaining area or sacrificing anything the captain needs. There are excellent sightlines, both for docking, and running at speed. There’s a combination of analog switches, dual Raymarine displays and SmartCarftVesselView. A small window opens beside the captain’s chair to help with communication while docking, though the joystick controls make it simple enough.

In front of the helm, the windshield is pushed forward, allowing natural light to open up the lower salon. It’s the equivalent of cathedral ceilings in a condo and it’s a clever touch, only sacrificing a few feet of exterior bow space which, to be honest, is rarely utilized as much as the rest of the boat.

Down below is a full-beam master, mid-ship with private head and shower and lots of storage and hanging lockers. At the bow is the expertly appointed, forward stateroom. Flanking the entrance to it are the guest head, to port, and the guest shower, to starboard.

The 470 Sundancer is like a floating condo, but it handles like a sport boat. Cutting through chop on our test day as if it wasn’t there and cruising very nicely around 30 miles per hour.

2016 Crownline E4 Boat Review

For dedicated day-cruisers - who want the kind of luxury and space offered by big pontoon boats, but with more convenience and better performance - deckboats are a great alternative. The Crownline E4, part of the Illinois company’s Eclipse lineup, has many of the attributes needed for deckboat success.

At 24 feet six inches long, with an eight-feet six-inch beam, the E4 has size on its side. It uses it well, with three distinct gathering zones: the bow compartment, main cockpit and aft swim deck. There are boarding ladders at the bow and stern. While both can be used for access to the water, the bow ladder is especially helpful when the boat is pulled up to a beach or sandbar.

Both the small, forward swim deck and the larger one aft are covered with soft-touch rubberized mat material for barefoot comfort.

The E4’s capacity is listed as 13 persons, but six or seven could best take advantage of the space and luxury the boat has to offer.

The broad bow compartment, any deckboat’s main selling feature, includes two curvy body-fitting full-length lounges on the E4. They come complete with armrests. There’s plenty of room for more than two to sit in less than total comfort and there’s also plenty of space for picnic supplies or water toys in the lockers below.

The swiveling helm and companion seats are comfortable and can be turned to face the J-shaped lounge aft and to port. Its aft section can be converted to seats that face back over the swim deck, or folded down to create a full sun lounge. There’s a small jump seat to starboard. A spacious enclosed head, in the companion console, is a convenience appreciated by committed day-cruisers.

With all that comfort on board, the E4 is also a capable performer, powered by a MerCruiser 350 MAG twin-prop Bravo III sterndrive. The 300hp engine combines well with the ventilated FastTab hull for relatively speedy acceleration, a top speed approaching 50 miles per hour and easy cruising speeds in the 30- to 35-mph zone.

Under way or at rest, comfort comes first on the Crownline E4.

2016 Grand S420 NL Boat Test

A mid-sized rigid inflatable (RIB) can serve as a tender for a large yacht, an all-round cottage runabout or a versatile compact day-cruiser. Whatever role it plays, it has to be light, with a comfortable and practical cockpit layout and a fuel-efficient, reliable mid-range outboard on the transom.

The Grand S420 NLF test boat, one of the European boatbuilder’s Silver Line models, fits the bill on all counts and adds some unique and handy options.

About 14 feet long, it’s got a bench seat at the helm, an adult-size jump seat ahead of the central helm console and a small bow seat atop a locker right forward. Its High Step Hull, with wide chines, well-placed strakes and fine bow entry, is comfortable at cruising speeds, even in sizeable, steep-sided waves on test day.

Powered by a 40-hp Honda BF40 four-stroke outboard, the S420 accelerates quickly, reaching 20 miles per hour in four-point-one seconds and 30 mph in under eight seconds. Top speed is 31.8 mph, a number that could be improved in calmer conditions. The engine is quiet, fuel-injected and economical.

At all speeds, the boat’s inflatable collar provides stability in lumpy waves and plenty of buoyancy. Lake conditions made it difficult to operate long at top speeds, but at cruising speeds and slower the boat is comfortable and always feels safe. There are plenty of handholds on the tubes plus a stainless-steel grab-bar around the top of the console.

For a 14-foot RIB, storage is adequate, with room for gear in bow console and helm seat lockers. The portable fuel tank on the test boat is behind the helm seat. There is some bow rise while accelerating to plane, but it’s short-lived.

Given the S420’s solid performance, the options on the test boat “ including a folding navigation arch with lights, an electrical package that includes lights and a battery switch, plus fibreglass entry step units built into the back of each inflatable tube “ are all bonuses.

2016 Stanley Mink 18 DC Boat Review

Manufactured by Connor Industries, Stanley welded aluminum boats are tough and built to withstand rough treatment. The Mink is offered in centre or dual console layouts of 16 or 18 feet, with both models having a seven-foot beam. The deep V hull ismade from 3/16-inch aluminum and incorporates a keel guard, lifting strakes and welded motor mount bracket. The self-bailing cockpit is rugged with non-slip diamond plate aluminum flooring.

The dual console has a tall aluminum framed windshield with an opening centre section that provides excellent protection. The helm is as basic as it gets with a stainless steel wheel, Yamaha Multi-function gauge, four circuit breaker panel and a 12-volt outlet. Seating consists of a pair of adjustable pedestal seats with optional Sunbrella cushions.

Although it’s a bowrider, seating is essentially a jump seat, with an optional cushion and the base is a watertight locker. Welded cleats flank the anchor locker and this model featured a pair of optional handrails on the gunnels.

The only other enclosed storage is in the base of the transom seat where you will also find the battery and portable fuel tank. A nice touch is the water separator fuel filter mounted here.

There are several options available for the Mink “ from cooler seats to canvas options. Our test 18DC had the optional canvas top and bow cover package. If you feel the need to personalize or dress it up, you can have the Mink painted.

Powering this model was a Yamaha F90, the maximum horsepower for the 18. The F90 is a powerful, yet quiet engine, registering just 84 dB at cruise. The noise was generated more from wind and water. Time to plane was five-point-nine seconds and lightly loaded the Mink stayed on plane at 16.5 miles per hour.

Whether you commute to an island cottage, haul tons of supplies, need a boat that the kids can’t scratch or just like a boat that requires virtually zero maintenance (outboard motor excluded) a Stanley Mink fits the bill.

2016 Zodiac Yachtline 380 DL Boat Review

To do proper duty as a yacht tender, a mid-sized rigid inflatable (RIB) must be comfortable in all weather conditions and easy to board. But if you’re like most yacht owners - and boat owners in general - it has to look great and perform well.

While carrying the most recognizable name in inflatable boats, the 12-foot, six-inch Zodiac Yachtline 380 DL test boat does all that, in high style.

Weather on test day is great for testing the mettle of any RIB; the lake was lumpy and windy. The Zodiac, with an 18-degree deadrise hull, takes it all in stride. Its fibreglass hull ensures soft landings and the inflatable Hypalon collar delivers the ultimate in stability and safety.

The 380’s built-in fuel tank, installed well forward, helps to balance the boat for improved handling and performance.

Powered by a Yamaha 50 four-stroke, the 380 DL tops out at 38.7 miles per hour at 6,000 rpm. It accelerates to 20 mph in four-point-seven seconds and 30 mph in seven-point-four seconds. The Yamaha is quiet, fuel-injected and will deliver excellent fuel economy.

The 380’s hull has many practical features, including storage in a forward cushioned locker and in a jump-seat style locker ahead of the console. There’s more storage space behind the helm seat. The moulded fibreglass unit aft of the seat also has a streamlined design and adds to the boat’s appearance.

Teak boarding pads, located forward on the stainless-steel bow raid and atop the deck on two “pods” just aft of the helm seat, are a practical touch. They also contribute to a warm, classy appearance.

Despite its size, the 380 has plenty of seating, with the double-side helm seat, a small seat to port of the helm console above the fuel tank, plus cushioned seats on top of lockers in front of the console and right in the bow.

Some of the seats may serve children best, if it’s a long passage. But they will all arrive safely and stylishly.

2016 MirroCraft Dual Impact 1766 Boat Test

Many runabouts are designed to please both fishing and watersports enthusiasts, but not all succeed. On the water, it’s not easy being a two-way player.

The aluminum Mirrocraft Dual Impact 1766 test boat, however, uses both unique and well-proven solutions.

In full fishing mode, the 17-foot Wisconsin-built Mirrocraft test boat has carpeted casting platforms in the bow and stern, complete with high bicycle-style casting seats. In the floor forward, there’s a dedicated battery locker and wiring ready for an electric trolling motor. Aft, there’s a 16.7 gallon (53.4 L) aerated livewell. There are dedicated rod-holders in coaming lockers and optional vinyl flooring in the cockpit area, for easy cleanups.

The walk-through windshield provides good protection, but is not as tall as those on many dedicated multi-species fishing boats.

Converting the boat to watersports mode is easy. In the bow area, the fitted drop-in lids on forward storage lockers flip over to reveal attached cushions. They easily install on the opposite sides to create a comfortable bow seating area. A small portion of the platform flips forward to complete the bow seating conversion. Aft, the switch is even easier. The casting platform flips back and a seat-back folds up to form a comfortable bench seat.

A high, solid aluminum watersports pylon “ high enough to please skiers, tubers and budding wakeboarders “ completes the changeover. The small swim deck and boarding ladder are ready any time.

The test boat’s black hull colour and white and grey graphics “ like the comfortable, high-back seats “ will appeal to boaters of any stripe. Performance with the Yamaha 150 four-stroke outboard also has broad appeal.

Wavy test-day weather cut top speed by a few miles per hour, but the 1766 still reaches a top speed of 50.2 mph at 6,000 rpm in GPS-measured testing. Acceleration is fine: 0-20 mph in 3.9 seconds and 0-30 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Test day shows the boat can handle waves and weather easily. That’s something else all kinds of boaters appreciate.

2016 Supra SE 450 Boat Test

Well-rounded tow sports boats these days need big passenger and ballast capacity plus plenty of power to please water skiers, wakeboarders and wakesurfers.

Technically, surfers don’t get towed, but wakesurfing is behind a whole new generation of boats. The Supra SE450 is one of them.

As a V-drive inboard, with a powerful and heavy 438-hp 6.2 L Ford Raptor V-8, marinized by Indmar, mounted right aft, the SE 450 already has an edge in wake and surf creation. Its Smart Plate 2.0 shapes the wake for skiers or wakeboarders. The optional Swell Surf System installed on our test boat, combined with 3,200 pounds of ballast in hard and flexible tanks, takes the 450’s wake to a higher level.

By aiming the boat’s powerful prop-wash or rooster-tail to one side or another, the Swell Surf System creates massive waves that are easily switched from one side to the other without moving ballast.

The Ford Raptor-based V-8 provides plenty of power and torque at all engine speeds and the electronic Vision system, displayed on a Murphy touch-screen, offers easy pre-sets for creating low, soft water-skiing wakes (using no ballast), bigger wake-boarding wakes with some ballast and super-sized surf wakes with full tanks. With electronically controlled plate and engine systems, it’s never been easier for a driver to deliver perfect wakes, or none at all.

For all-round day cruising or cottage service, the SE450 is speedy and comfortable. The driver gets a heated seat that adjusts electrically. For passengers, there’s a wide wraparound seating area in the bow that converts to a full sunlounge, plus wraparound seating in the main cockpit that holds a crowd.

Storage space is massive. The wake tower has a built-in Bimini, optional clamping board racks and optional tower speakers to go with the booming stereo.

If you want to go big in wakes or waves and bring along a huge posse to watch, the Supra SE450 delivers bigtime.

2016 Reinell 195 BR Boat Review

The Reinell brand is no newcomer to the boating scene, with a history that goes back 80 years in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Since being acquired by Kelowna, B.C., based Campion Marine two years ago, Reinell has been a naturalized Canadian boat line.

With seven runabout models ranging from 16 to 22 feet, in bowrider with fish ‘n ski versions, Reinell is positioned as a “value” brand. That means buyers get a lot of boat for their investment. The 185 test boat is certainly a good example of that.

Regardless of price, Reinell boats benefit from Campion’s design excellence and construction quality. The 185 has a fibreglass liner with non-skid floor and gelcoat finished lockers. There’s plenty of storage space in the large cockpit floor locker and partitions alongside the MerCruiser 4.3 TKS sterndrive provide more storage room in the engine compartment.

The bowrider layout, with a walk-through windshield and a spacious forward compartment, is uncomplicated. In the main cockpit, there’s a bench seat aft and swiveling seats, completewith lifting bolsters, at the helm and companion positions. A section of the aft bench seat to starboard lifts to create a step leading aft.

Our test boat also benefits from options including black gelcoat topsides, snap-in carpet and a tilt steering wheel.

The 190hp V-6 sterndrive is carbureted and a well-proven performer that’s well matched to the 185. Acceleration times are impressive. Top speed at 5,500 rpm is 46.1 miles per hour. The boat could cruise comfortably all day at 25 mph at about 3,400 rpm.

Cornering and handling is fine, the helm is well laid-out with all necessary gauges and the seat is comfortable and supportive. The test boat’s optional black colouredgelcoats hull sides look great.

The Reinell 185 BR is a good boat as well as being a great value and that should be welcome news for plenty of boaters.

2016 Lund 1875 Crossover XS Boat Review

Just as crossovers in the automotive world are extremely popular with families for their flexibility, they are also popular in the aluminum boating world for those same reasons. The Lund 1875 Crossover XS is a great example.

The 1875 is built on Lund’s proven Integrated Power Strake(IPS) hull, which is designed to plane quickly, corner sharply and ride dryly. With the power of the Mercury 150 FourStroke behind me, I experienced those features quite nicely, getting onto plane in a mere three-point-seven seconds. Handling - especially with the SeaStar Hydraulic Steering - was crisp and responsive.

With only a few select options, the 1875 comes ready for a day of family fun. The addition of the ski package, Snap-in carpet, comfortable pilot chairs, Bimini top, bow cushions, stainless swim ladder and additional stereo speakers ensure the family is happy and comfortable.

Even as a fish and ski model, serious anglers won’t be disappointed. The 1875 has a spacious forward casting deck, a mount for a fishing chair, two in-deck storage lockers and bow anchor locker. Smaller items will fit into an open space at the bow that is flanked by the trolling motor plug and courtesy light.

An in-floor locker handles skis and boards and forward of that is a locking storage space for five, seven-foot rods. More storage for eight-foot rods is located in the portside gunnel.

The transom casting platform has flush mounts for a ski pylon and fishing chair. Centred is the 24-gallon livewell with light and timer.

Wide gunnel decks and Lund’s SportTrack accessory fastening system provide all of the mounting points for downriggers and a long list of fishing accessories.

The molded helm has a full set of gauges, tilt wheel and space for mounting big electronics. The system switches, Infinity AM/FM MP3 Bluetooth stereo, plus 12 volt accessory plug and auxiliary input are all conveniently located.

At almost 19 feet the 1875 Crossover XS is ready to tackle big lakes, big fish and family fun.

2016 Scarab 255 HO Impulse Boat Review

If you like your fun on the water to be bold and flashy with plenty of power - jet power that is - Scarab has what you’re looking for. The Scarab 255 HO Impulse boasts one of the biggest jet drives on the market with twin 250 hp Rotax engines.

With a total of 500hp on tap, this boat is quick! It takes only three-point-six seconds to get to 20 miles per hour and five-point-two to get to 30. Top speed is an impressive 52.3 miles per hour - a decent number for a test weight exceeding 4,000 pounds. At 5,500 rmp, a comfortable cruise speed of 30 mph can be dialed in.

What this big boat delivers is a roomy interior with space for 13 and the power to have some serious fun. The optional three-compartment Wake Blast System allows you to switch it up for a day of wakeboarding or wakesurfing.

Scarab’s 255 is offered in three trim models: the base 255, the 255 HO and the all out 255 HO Impulse. Each trim level offers a host of desirable features and a choice of Rotax power from twin 150s to twin 250s.

Our test boat in Laser Red had premium upholstery - a first-rate standard in this boat. Smart Mat carpeting that drains away water and resists mold and rot makes a good add-on.

The 255 features a large draining locker in the swim platform, a good-size change room or head area with an opening to port, plus a sink and a Porta-Potti. Seating is plentiful in the 255. Scarab’s Versa Lounge aft seating system converts from a sunpad to multi-position lounge seating and cockpit seating features fill-ins to create a full U lounge.

Heading out on the water I found the helm comfortable, well protected and the controls and instrumentation intuitive. The RotaxiControl system allows you to easily select from Cruise Mode, Eco Mode, Ski Mode and Docking Mode. The presentation of modes and data is straightforward.

Underway the Scarab 255 gives you both the ride and sensation of a traditional boat, but when pushed reminds you that it still has all the attributes of a jet boat.

2016 Glastron GT 205 Boat Review

The Glastron brand has worked to build a reputation synonymous with style and quality while maintaining a reasonable pricepoint even with a trailer. The Glastron GT205 is a stylish boat that lives up to that standing.

Sitting dockside or at rest in the open water, the GT 205 looks as though it’s in motion with its aggressive lines, distinct windshield and bold two-tone graphics. The design is reminiscent of the earlier Carlson years with the retro racing stripes on the upholstery.

The interior is edgy, and boldly executed. Twin fully adjustable bucket seats with optional bolsters ensure comfort up front. The helm is unique with its hooded instruments and the push-pull switches have a great look too. The locker of the companion helm hides the marine stereo, auxiliary input and 12V power supply.

The aft bench seat can handle three comfortably. The port side base cushion slides back revealing a draining locker and cooler space. The centre lifts off to access storage. The portside cushion slides out, creating an extended lounge area “ a cool feature. A small section of the port side sunpad folds over to create a walk-through to the swim platform. Dropping the support legcreates a backrest for sunning.

The bow seating is ideal for lounging facing forward, while a backrest pad in the bow provides comfort for seating facing back. With a maximum capacity of nine, you will need the room. Storage is found in the molded bases and the forward locker can handle an anchor and rode.

Lifting the sunpad reveals an all-new 250 hp version of the MerCruiser 4.5 LV-6 engine. Mercury’s in-house engineered and manufactured purpose-built marine engine launched in 2015. On the water, the new 4.5 L, one of multiple power options from Mercury and Volvo, performed quite well.

The Glastron’sSuper Stable Vee (SSV) hull planed in four-point-five seconds and topped out at 50 miles per hour. With 21 degrees of deadrise, the ride was smooth, dry and the handling was sharp. The hull also created ample lift since I was able to maintain a minimum planing speed of 17.5 mph.

2016 Boston Whaler 210 Dauntless Boat Review

Boston Whaler has built a solid reputation for its well-crafted line of unsinkable boats. If you are looking for truly versatile boat, one of their Dauntlessmodels, ranging in size from 17 to 27 feet, will certainly meet your expectations. Sitting mid pack is this 210 Dauntless, geared for both family fun and serious fishing.

Whalers have a distinctly attractive look that makes them highly recognizable on the water. With a cockpit depth of 20 inches, the Dauntless is lower to the water than many competitors. This aside, the hull provides a dry, stable ride in all conditions, but the most extreme.

As with all Whalers, quality and attention to detail is first-rate. All deck hardware is 316 L stainless steel and railings and the T-top structure are welded.

Underway, the optional T-top was solid, as was the hull and deck structure. No flex, no sounds, no rattles. The Mercury Verado 200 Pro’s electro-hydraulic steering and Digital Throttle and Shift control (DTS) made driving this boat effortless.

The console layout is clean and has space set aside for flush mounting electronics. In this model, Mercury SmartCraft gauges were added alongside the switch panel to monitor theVerado 200. The console incorporates a livewell under the forward seat and the interior is reasonably roomy for accessing the head. Other options at the helm include electric trim tabs with indicators and a Fusion satellite radio system.

With a capacity of eight people, the Dauntless has a plenty of seating. The doublewide helm with folding backrest is comfortable standing or seated. Flipping up the aft casting deck reveals full beam transom seating, and with the optional bow cushions, two more can lounge forward.

Ready to fish, the 210 Dauntless has six stainless rod holders forward of the console, four more at the transom and four on the T-top. The optional helm seat adds a 25-gallon livewell, raw water washdown and knife and leader holder.

Inshore, offshore or cruising the lakes, the 210 Dauntless will serve you well.

2016 Sea Doo PWC RXT-X 300 Boat Review

Introduced in 2007, Sea-Doo’s high performance RXT-X has gone through some big changes for 2016.

The 1630 ACE engine is nine percent bigger and produces 15 percent more power. The aluminum block engines are plasma coated and the new intercooler reduces the air temperature by 120 percent, resulting in a more condensed air charge and the most powerful Sea-Doo ever.

The engine is available on a few models, but the RXT-X is what I was eager to get my hands on “ and for good reason. TheErgolock system’s Advanced Ergonomic Steering was immediately obvious. The handholds have palm-rests that extend out to create a flat resting surface which helps save your grip strength during a full day of cruising. The handlebars are adjustable, too, so thewidth and angle of grip becomes natural.

Knee indents and angled footrests lock your knees in place for aggressive cornering and high-speed, straight-line runs. Instead of feeling like you’re sitting on the Sea-Doo, it feels more like you’re sitting init.

Now stopping faster is possible thanks to the first major upgrade to the game-changing Intelligent Brake and Reverse (iBR) system. Plus, more importantly, there is nobow diving that used to result in a wave of water crashing into your lap when stopping.

The S3 hull, the power of the new engine and adjusting the trim meant that even in high winds and big waves running from Tampa Bay into the Gulf was surprisingly quiet and comfortable.Easily, I was able to hit a top speed of 71 miles per hour in moderate chop and the RXT-X cruised exceptionally well in all conditions between 40 and 60 miles per hour.

This Sea-Doo is designed for those who want to get from point A to point B as fast as possible, but it’s also a capable and comfortable ride. I just feel bad for the Sea-Doo designers who now have to find a way to top this in the coming years.

2016 Monterey 258 SS Boat Review

Positioning themselves as a builder of technologically innovative and quality boats, Monterey offers one of the few lifetime warranties, transferable for ten years. Going over the 258 from bow to stern there was nothing I could note that would not live up to the claim.

With a LOA of 25 feet and a beam of eight feet six inches, the 258SS has an expansive cockpit that is thoughtfully laid out and finishedinquality materials and details. Monterey has designed cockpit seating for maximum flexibility and ease of configuration.

Dominating the back of the boat is what they call the Sun Island Feature. A backrest divides the island into a sunpad with a forward facing transom seat. Folding the backrest forward through several positional transitions, the island converts into an aft facing lounge. With the backrest flipped flat the island is a mega sunpad. If that’s not enough, with the backrest upright, a cushion props up to create a lounge facing the extended swim platform. The port side seating is flexible as well.

For a 25-foot craft, the head in the port console is surprisingly spacious and well appointed. I give Monterey bonus points for the large access door, too.

The helm on the 258 sums up Monterey’s design approach - it’scomfortable, lavish and wonderfully detailed. It gives the impression of a high-end sports car, befitting of a boat with luxury and performance aspirations.

The 258 SS performs. One can choose from several Mercury and Volvo sterndrives. Our test model had the all-new MerCruiser 6.2L coupled to a Bravo III drive. This purpose built marine V-8 with 350 hp did not disappoint. Acceleration was solid, especially at mid range and the top speed was just over 50 mph. Mercury’s Adaptive Speed Control and the Monterey’s hull design made tossing the 258 in and out of turns just plain fun.

2016 Tahoe 450 TS Boat Review

The Tahoe 450 TS has everything you would expect from an easy-to-trailer, peppy family runabout, and then some.

The stepped, longer and wider Powerglide II hull allows you to fly across the water. It pops onto plane quickly with a three-second holeshotwith a solo driver and, fully loaded, it’s a still impressive six-and-a-half seconds to plane.

The compact Tahoe was as confident through tight turns as it was cutting through the waves of the Arlington River at the north end of Florida’s Lake George.

With the 115 Mercury, I pushed it to just under 45 miles per hour and cruised very comfortably at a lively 35 miles per hour. Cruising closer to 30 may be more comfortable in bigger chop.

The high windscreen wasn’t much of a concern on a hot test day at noon in central Florida, but further north where the season starts and ends with cooler weather, it would be a very welcome feature.

The wider hull of the 450 TS means that even with a traditional layout and a smaller length you have plenty of bow seating. The bucket seats mid-ship look racecar inspired, as do the gauges and wheel. Over on the port side, the glove box and stereo controls also feature an MP3 input and 12V power source.
There’s an impressive amount of storage for an 18-and-a-half foot boat. Compartments are hidden under the seats and in-floor and there’s storage in the coamings right beside some of the many built-in cup holders.

Grab handles and speakers are intuitively placed, flanking the rear bench seating area that flips up to reveal more stowage space and, handily concealing a full-size cooler.

The transom sunpad cushions can be unhooked from the locker storage doors to create a large launch pad. The deep reaching ladder off the starboard swim platform makes it easy for kids to climb back aboard.

The Tahoe 450 TS is a lot of boat for a very reasonable price. This boat proves you don’t have to break the bank to get a new boat.

2016 Pioneer Venture 197 Boat Test

Leisure time, especially on the water, is valuable. So many boaters don’t want to spend any of it cleaning and maintaining. For them, there’s the Pioneer Venture 197.

It’s got good looks, with a touch of Carolina flare in its bow and a sheerline that drops just aft of amidships. It’s also got good behaviour, easy-clean seating and cockpit, plus an easily maintained Yamaha 200 four-stroke outboard. All the boat and motor will need at the end of the busiest day will be a good hose-down, perhaps a touch of the brush and a quick engine flush if you’ve been out in salt water.

With a twin-console and full windshield layout, the Venture 197 has a spacious, well-padded bowrider-style seating forward, a swiveling helm seat, fold-down back-to-back lounger on the companion side and a bench seat aft.

An all-round performer, the 197 comes complete with a livewell aft, an insulated fish-box and four rod holders. Our test boat also comes with a sturdy welded aluminum ski or wakeboard mini-tower over the outboard engine. A small swim deck and boarding ladder provide access to the water.

There’s lots of room to store picnic supplies and water toys along with fishing tackle. The bow compartment, with recessed grab rails, is very comfortable.

The Venture’s 18-degree deadrise hull handles waves easily but also ensures soft landings and stability. With the Yamaha 200 on the transom, performance is assured.

With trim tabs down, the boat is on plane and running at 20.2 miles per hour at 3,000 rpm. It cruises comfortably at 25 mph at 3,000 rpm. You could run effortlessly at that speed all day, or go faster. Top speed in GPS testing is 47.8 mph at 5,800 rpm. Cornering is precise. Trim tabs will likely be needed only to balance loads.

The bolstered seat at the helm is rarely found on specialized fishing boats, but the stainless steel steering wheel has a “spinner” that’s usually only found on southern fishing boats. Like the rest of the boat’s features, they are a welcome and wise combination.

2016 Formula 270 BR Boat Test

The Formula 270 Bowrider has plenty of style, a nice turn of speed, quality construction and luxurious day-boating accommodations. It also provides the kind of security and comfort that can only come with a 22-degree deep-V hull.

Founded by legendary offshore racer and boatbuilder Don Aronow and built for more than four decades by the Illinois-based Porter family, Formula has plenty of offshore performance DNA. The 270 Bowrider is built for luxurious day cruising, but holds onto that heritage.

Test day is not blustery enough for a good wave-crashing workout, but the 270 shrugs off tight figure eights and wake-generated waves. It also provides stylish good looks and creature comforts.

The test boat’s sleek performance-boat lines are cloaked in a classy grey and black Imron paint job. On board, accommodations are very comfortable, but convertible. The bow compartment has two full chaise-style lounges, but can also convert to a sunpad or, by removing sections of the seating, to an area for four or more to sit comfortably, around a table if you wish.

In running mode, the cockpit has a double wide helm and single companion seat, with an L-shaped lounge to port and smaller bench to starboard. The backs of the helm, companion and aft bench seats are easily flipped and locked into new positions. So the helm and companion seats can face aft to create a circular lounge; flipping the aft bench seat back forward creates a lounge facing aft over the swim deck.

There are plenty of large storage spaces and a roomy enclosed head for the crew’s convenience. There’s an anchor locker forward and easy walkway access aft. Materials, fit and finish are top-grade.

Acceleration is fine, powered by the Volvo Penta 380 DuoProp V-8. The boat cruises comfortably at 25 miles per hour at 3,500 rpm and 30 mph at 4,000 rpm. Top speed on test day is 48.8 mph at 6000 rpm. Some wave action, to help the deep-V break loose, would have pushed it over 50 mph.

Deep-V designs may give up some speed in flat water, but like the Formula 270 Bowrider, they deliver confidence and comfort regardless of waves and weather. When the wind comes up, that’s priceless.

2016 Marquis 660 SY Boat Review

Marquis Yachts first hit the market in 2004 and has continued to refine their European influenced, American-built line of luxury yachts since then. The 660 is a semi-custom built yacht, giving potential owners plenty of leeway in selecting layouts, options and finishes.

The 660 is designed to entertain. The main deck is accessed from the cockpit and through the sliding glass door you enter into the salon to the forward helm. There is plenty of seating - all upholstered in luxurious fabric. Stainless accents are set off by walnut and zebrano wood trim, while oyster pine floor make a real statement for the care taken with the interior decor. Ample dimmable lighting brings the space to life as the sun sets. No expense has been spared with the Sony entertainment system with a 42-inch LED TV.

The high-end designer décor continues into the galley with solid surface countertops, walnut accents and top-notch appliances including a microwave, convection oven/broiler. There is plenty of storage including a dedicated liquor and glassware cabinet. One drawback is that some cabinets and drawers are located in the companion stairway leading down from the galley.

The 660 has a forward VIP stateroom and starboard and port guest staterooms. The VIP stateroom is luxurious and has its own private head. The guest staterooms have twin berths and bunks to port. They share the guest head with a separate shower stall.

Befitting a 68-foot yacht, the 660 has a truly well-appointed full beam master stateroom. Taking advantage of the 17-foot beam allowed Marquis to include a sizable walk in closet and beautifully appointed head aft of the stateroom. Walnut cabinetry dominates here with built in seating, a computer workstation, entertainment centre multiple drawers and lockers.

The flybridge is separated into a forward area with seating facing the portside Euro helm. Aft, the seating focuses around the large cockpit table.

The Marquis Sport Yacht is designed and built for the experienced boater who recognizes excellence, quality and craftsmanship and will accept nothing less.

2016 Crownline E4 Boat Test
