2016 Formula 270 BR Boat Test

The Formula 270 Bowrider has plenty of style, a nice turn of speed, quality construction and luxurious day-boating accommodations. It also provides the kind of security and comfort that can only come with a 22-degree deep-V hull.

Founded by legendary offshore racer and boatbuilder Don Aronow and built for more than four decades by the Illinois-based Porter family, Formula has plenty of offshore performance DNA. The 270 Bowrider is built for luxurious day cruising, but holds onto that heritage.

Test day is not blustery enough for a good wave-crashing workout, but the 270 shrugs off tight figure eights and wake-generated waves. It also provides stylish good looks and creature comforts.

The test boat’s sleek performance-boat lines are cloaked in a classy grey and black Imron paint job. On board, accommodations are very comfortable, but convertible. The bow compartment has two full chaise-style lounges, but can also convert to a sunpad or, by removing sections of the seating, to an area for four or more to sit comfortably, around a table if you wish.

In running mode, the cockpit has a double wide helm and single companion seat, with an L-shaped lounge to port and smaller bench to starboard. The backs of the helm, companion and aft bench seats are easily flipped and locked into new positions. So the helm and companion seats can face aft to create a circular lounge; flipping the aft bench seat back forward creates a lounge facing aft over the swim deck.

There are plenty of large storage spaces and a roomy enclosed head for the crew’s convenience. There’s an anchor locker forward and easy walkway access aft. Materials, fit and finish are top-grade.

Acceleration is fine, powered by the Volvo Penta 380 DuoProp V-8. The boat cruises comfortably at 25 miles per hour at 3,500 rpm and 30 mph at 4,000 rpm. Top speed on test day is 48.8 mph at 6000 rpm. Some wave action, to help the deep-V break loose, would have pushed it over 50 mph.

Deep-V designs may give up some speed in flat water, but like the Formula 270 Bowrider, they deliver confidence and comfort regardless of waves and weather. When the wind comes up, that’s priceless.
