2016 Monterey 258 SS Boat Review

Positioning themselves as a builder of technologically innovative and quality boats, Monterey offers one of the few lifetime warranties, transferable for ten years. Going over the 258 from bow to stern there was nothing I could note that would not live up to the claim.

With a LOA of 25 feet and a beam of eight feet six inches, the 258SS has an expansive cockpit that is thoughtfully laid out and finishedinquality materials and details. Monterey has designed cockpit seating for maximum flexibility and ease of configuration.

Dominating the back of the boat is what they call the Sun Island Feature. A backrest divides the island into a sunpad with a forward facing transom seat. Folding the backrest forward through several positional transitions, the island converts into an aft facing lounge. With the backrest flipped flat the island is a mega sunpad. If that’s not enough, with the backrest upright, a cushion props up to create a lounge facing the extended swim platform. The port side seating is flexible as well.

For a 25-foot craft, the head in the port console is surprisingly spacious and well appointed. I give Monterey bonus points for the large access door, too.

The helm on the 258 sums up Monterey’s design approach - it’scomfortable, lavish and wonderfully detailed. It gives the impression of a high-end sports car, befitting of a boat with luxury and performance aspirations.

The 258 SS performs. One can choose from several Mercury and Volvo sterndrives. Our test model had the all-new MerCruiser 6.2L coupled to a Bravo III drive. This purpose built marine V-8 with 350 hp did not disappoint. Acceleration was solid, especially at mid range and the top speed was just over 50 mph. Mercury’s Adaptive Speed Control and the Monterey’s hull design made tossing the 258 in and out of turns just plain fun.
